Future of Manual Testing

August 9, 2016
Manual testing, software tester career

Recent years Testing has developed a reputation in software development cycle. But during this course of Manual Testing, various fields have emerged like Automation, Big Data, Tools etc. In this section, we would be studying about Future of MANUAL Testing, which is a hot topic for every tester these days.

What is Manual Testing

Manual Testing is the step by step process of building, developing and maintaining a quality software, conducted manually to ensure the performance and quality of the software developed. The process of Manual Testing should start at the time when the Requirement Specification Researches start. The Testing Team lead should be included in the discussion session so that the test team could design the test criteria and the way in which it should be executed.

The Goal of Manual Testing

The Manual testing is the preliminary testing phase which evaluates the behavior of the application developed, by doing a step by step evaluation of the requirement
specification analysis record.

The main goal of manual testing is to make sure that the application works fine without any functional defects and bugs and also as per the requirement specification

The Responsibilities of QA Testers

The testers are expected to include in the development cycle from the very first stage of the software development cycle. Some daily activities that manual test leaders should do are as given below.

  • Test leaders are responsible for defining quality metrics, creating test strategy, monitoring test plans, and supervising the test activities.
  • After the interactive sessions, they should design the tracks for managing test objectives, test policies, test strategies and test plans.
  • Estimate the testing.
  • Consult with the group members, to help them with the testing.
  • Analyze and monitor the analysis, design, execution, implementation and execution of the test cases, test procedures, and test suites.
  • As the test execution proceeds, write the summary reports on test status.
  • Test leader’s role is most probably assigned to a project manager, development manager or quality assurance manager, expects them to control all the testing procedure.

Manual Testing Scope for Today

  • Manual Testing is an inevitable process which should be handled associated with every SDLC.This is said to be essential as no product can be released only by using Automated Testing.
  • Manual Testers have a lot of opportunities at present and most of the companies recruit Quality Analysts who are experienced in Manual Testing at the dawn of their career.
  • After analyzing the opportunities available for manual testers found that many companies follow a new strategy for the recruitment. What they demand is that testers should be proficient in both manual and automation testing, and knowing any programming language will be an added advantage.
  • The important aspect to be noted is that manual testing always prominent to automation testing as the process has the ability to explore the application in ways that automated tests can’t.But automation can do things that take a lot of time to do manually.
  • So, to save time, money and resources most of the companies tend to recruit people having skills both in manual and automation testing.

Future of Manual Testing

  • When takes to the next level in the field of manual testing, many of the IT companies tend to promote the test engineers to the test analysts. The future of manual testing tends to
closer and closer to the Software Development in requirements and functioning.
  • The changes and operational developments in manual testing prove that it is essential for the manual testers to improve their skills and daily working styles. The testers who
stick on Manual testing processes only should update their skills with automation testing frameworks, new technologies in terms of development/specialized testing
tools, leadership qualities, and process analysis.
  • The experts suggest, as most of the companies prefer testers eligible to handle both manual and automation testing, the testers are expected to get more techie.
  • There arise a belief that testers also need to be able to code. But that is not the right way to the transition of the job needs. The fact is that, as automated software testing is a key
part of Agile software development, what the testers are expected to do is

    • To up their skills and be more aware of the programming concepts and how the development works.
    • To be aware of how the code works.
    • To know more about how the business functions to make money.
    • To be capable of indulging in the management activities.
    • These are the steps which make them up to the level of a Test Analyst almost like the responsibilities of a Subject Matter Expert[SME].
  • Thus manual testing always exists along with all the new and new automation testing tools introduced and will long last with all its basic concepts to be developed and used
with required changes in every Software Development/Web Application development
  • Manual Testing and Automation Testing will complement each other for a very long time to come.
  • One more thing I have noticed is that being a manual tester the best thing to do is be a generalist, avoid to stick on testing a particular domain.
  • Getting opportunities to work on different domains and platforms gives an exciting experience about being a QA.
  • Having a broad set of experience across multiple areas of QA is best for better job prospects and salary.

To conclude, there is no complete substitute for manual testing. For performing test activities such as regression testing, load testing, and performance testing the automation
has become a necessity.

  • Without manual testing, the testing process will not be complete and there is a chance of critical functional issues if we less bothered about the manual testing process.
  • Manual testing is more reliable than automation and the skills like inductive reasoning, inference, and human intuition are used while manual testing process designed.
  • Automation cannot replace these factors.
  • When it matters money and available resources most of the companies prefer testers skilled in both manual and automation testing.
  • The Future of manual testing is safe and expanding with a lot of diversities to the management skills and developing the level up to the responsibilities of a Test Analyst.
