JIRA TOOL – THE BASICS

JIRA is a tool developed for tracking bugs and issues. The product also helps to develop project management functions. JIRA is developed by Atlassian, an Australian Company that develops applications for developers, managers and content managers. The tool is designed to help the software team to plan, track and release great software. JIRA Software is an Agile Project Management Tool which supports any agile methodology.

The software is available through a monthly subscription (software-as-a-service). Also, can deploy the software on the server for an upfront license.

What are the features incorporates in JIRA Tool?

 

  • Issue TrackingThe tool helps to follow and record all the issues or problems the user identifies. Also, trace the records and results until the issue is solved.
  • Agile Project ManagementA project management method called Agile is used in JIRA. Agile project management is helpful to design a software development style which is highly flexible and interactive. Agile is an alternative to the traditional sequential development methods like the waterfall.
  • Highly CustomizableDepending on the team’s requirements the users can customize the tool. All the customization can be done from the GUI itself without any programming knowledge.
  • ExtensibleJIRA has a set of the powerful plugin system. Most of the useful features of JIRA are created as Plugins. 1000+ add-ons and integration options are available.
  • Custom FiltersJira Query Language (JQL) is used to create filters. The filters are helpful to see what exactly need to do in a single click.
  • Evaluation of the development: The tool helps to evaluate the extent of development. The changes occur in development phases are recorded and helpful while testing.

 

JIRA Agile Testing

Agile Testing is the process of testing software which are developed based on the agile methodologies. In the JIRA, the Agile Testing can be conducted by selecting options in the ‘Agile’ Tab. When Click on the “Getting Started” under Agile Tab, there gets an option to select the Agile Methodologies like Scrum, Kanban. This will indicate the methodology on which the software is developed. Based on this settings, the issues are created in JIRA Agile.

What is a JIRA Issue?

The first step is importing projects to the JIRA Tool. The main menu displays an option ‘Issues’. Under this, an issue type, issues can create.

How Jira works?

The Issue Types can be classified into various forms such as:

  • Sub-Tasks
  • Technical Tasks
  • Bug
  • Epic
  • Improvement
  • New Feature
  • Story
  • Task

The related schemes and nature of the tasks are also explained.

Issue Attributes

Issue attributes are classified as follows:

  • Statuses: The Project development status is notified in this section.To Do, InProgress, Opened, Closed, Reopened and Resolved etc… are the status to be recorded.
  • Resolutions: The progress of the issue fixing is denoted here. The resolutions can be given as Fixed, Won’t Fix, Duplicate, Incomplete, Cannot Reproduce, Done etc..
  • Priorities: The priorities of the Issue are can be given here such as critical, major, minor, blocker, trivial etc…

Issue Security Schemes & Permission Schemes

Issue Security Schemes is the section to determine how to set security settings for the users.
Also, the Permission Schemes helps to create a set of permissions and to assign the project.

Epic

An epic is an Issue Type. An epic can capture either the whole project or a large body of the work. This can be divided into small modules, which are called sprints. To complete an epic should ensure all the small stories are completed.

Plugins in JIRA

JIRA provides a list of plugins available for working perfectly. ZenDesk, SalesForce, GitHub, GitBucket etc.. are some of the plugins.

How to create an Issue in JIRA

An Issue can create in JIRA in a few easy steps. JIRA is highly user-friendly and easy to manage. After logging in the Process is as given below.

Step 1: Click on the ‘Project’. A window will open with a list of options.
Step 2: Click on ‘Simple Issue Tracking’.
Step 3: Enter the data about the Issue and Assign the Issue to a Person.Click ‘Submit’.
Step 4: The next window gives provision to enter all the details of the Issue.And Click on ‘Create’.
Step 5: A pop-up will appear showing that the Issue creation is successfully Completed.

To edit an Issue

Step 1: Click on ‘Issues’ in the Menu bar.
Step 2: Click on ‘Search for Issues’.
Step 3: A new screen is opened and here can make any changes in the Issue.
Step 5: The ‘Time tracking section’ in the window helps to find the estimation time to resolve the issues.

Reports

The Reports on JIRA can be of different types based on the requirement. The information about the project, epic, sprints, issues etc.. can be generated as various reports.
The ‘Reports’ can have 2 different sections such as:

  • Reports for Scrum Projects
  • Reports for Kanban Projects

Also, can get the reports that are not in the Agile section. There is an option “Switch Reports” from which “All Reports” Can be selected to view the General Reports too.

Reports – Scrum Projects

Report Purpose
Burndown Chart Burndown Charts Applies to the Sprints. It specifies how much of works complete and how to manage the progress.
Sprint Report Sprint reports tracking the status of the sprint logs. Determines how much work is completed and pushed back to the backlogs.
Control Chart Iterates the complete cycle of the project.
Cumulative Flow Diagrams These Diagrams can be generated at any point of the work. Shows the status of issues, if any bottlenecks occur etc..
Epic Report Applies to the Epic. Shows the progress towards completing an epic.
Epic BurnDown Similar to the Epic Reports. But, tracks the projected number of sprints required to complete Epic.
Release Burndown Applies to the versions. Optimized for the scrum teams. To check the progress of works assigned.
 Velocity Chart Applies to the Sprints. Tracks the velocity of the team, by analyzing the completion of each sprint.
Version Reports Applies to the versions. Tracks the release dates.

Reports – Kanban Projects

Report Purpose
Control Chart Shows the overall cycle time of the project.
Cumulative Flow Diagram Shows the status of the issue at a particular duration. This report can be generated at any point of time.

Along with these, there are a series of general reports available to track the issues. Some of the Important reports are as given in the chart below:

Report Purpose
Pie Chart Report A pie chart displays the exact status of Issue. It makes the analysis  easier
Resolution Time Report The report tracks the time taken for solving a set of issues.
Time Tracking Reports Displays the to track information on issues.
Single Level Group By Report Issues is grouped by using filters. The reports are generated on the basis of these groups.
